Mount Van Hovenberg

I have very clear memories of the Olympic Games in Lake Placid in 1980. The victory of the American hockey team against the then USSR against Finland in the final. The five gold medals American speed skater Eric Heiden. The silver medal of Gaétan Boucher in the same discipline.

For cons, I have no memory of skiing competition held on the trails of Mount Van Hovenberg I traveled today ... to realize that they were truly "Olympic".

There is a skier English that often leaves comments on my blog which tracks hate that look like they are so broad boulevards. I do not want him to go skiing at Mount Van Hovenberg because all the paths of the former site of Olympic competition are in this genre.

Forget the word "trail" that simply does not apply. Rather, it is real roads where you can play classic and skate skiing. For shopping, fine. But as a skier Sunday, I must confess that I often feel like the scooter on the highway while skiing there.

This does not mean that the tracks are completely devoid of interest. For example, I rode the loop of the "five kilometers feminine" makes us zizaguer flank of Mount Van Hovenberg. What five kilometers, my friends! I do not remember working so hard over such a short distance. You really feel it's a golf tournament designed to allow the stronger to win.

course, there are some easy trails marked on the flat near the chalet host. But when one moves through the forest, all trails are in the same genre: a roller coaster where one is always now bind short descents and climbs that always seem longer. Given the width of the tracks, descents are hardly exciting. So we do not feel so rewarded for our efforts.

The cottage home center is a simple wooden building that has absolutely nothing to Olympic. But the place is warm and breathes skiing. Before, there is the stadium is a large open space where we draw several tracks coast and used for departures and arrivals competitions - but I also found the perfect to introduce a child to ski. Here making his son Arthur second career outing.

A tip in closing: if you go, bring your lunch. The canteen is on site that serves primarily the junk food and everything is very expensive.

Lake Placid Club

I read somewhere that the trails of Lake Placid Club have welcomed the cross-country skiing competitions for the 1932 Olympics. That may be why I felt back to that time by browsing.

The Lake Placid Club, the Golf Club Hotel Crown Plaza where I spend the weekend. Arrived about noon at Lake Placid, I decided to go skiing at this place because I had access to trails for free. And I must say that I got for my money ...

I have not made an unpleasant exit because I have skied in the beautiful snow. But the trail "left me hungry - especially because I spent my trip to tell me that there was much better to ski in the corner.

club's network extends over a dozen kilometers. During the first mile, you can ski on the ground golf and so much the better. It's the only time you have the chance to admire the mountains surrounding Lake Placid. We see in particular the ski jumps built for the 1980 Olympics.

Then we enter a thick forest of conifers and the land becomes slightly undulating. Long downhill slope, abrupt breaks ground fun to negotiate, nice gradual climb ... we are dealing with an excellent ground for cross-country skiing. And yet, the magic has not operated for a very simple reason: the state trails. Or rather their style.
Apart
loop near the cottage home, had been groomed trails without one trace of furrows. In fact, I felt more skiing on backcountry trails on the real cross-country ski trails maintained. When I said that I felt to be back in 1932 ...

short, do not tell the story: I had to ski elsewhere. But I should be able to resume tomorrow ...

Park Île-de-la-Visitation

Of all the nature parks in Montreal, that of Ile-de-la-Visitation is by far the fewest to offer skiers. The park is simply too small to have a trail system worthy of the name.

I knew all this before I make today. And I also knew that after the rain we had a few days ago, the conditions are, at best, atrocious. But I went anyway because I promised myself a long time to return to take some pictures and make a text worthy of the name.

The park offers three trails totaling about eight miles. The most interesting is that which brings us to the island of the Visitation where you can admire the Prairie River.

En plus d’être courts et plats, celles-ci ont un autre défaut: ils longent des sentiers de marche – then you can ski in the middle of the marchers, that what have always hated.

The chalet park is a beautiful small building in which there are many tables, but no food service. And as a waxing room, there a. .. a ski rack installed outside!

By cons, there is a small bistro in the basement of the miller's house where I stayed for a pleasant sipping coffee. By far the best moment of my trip.

Center cross-country ski trails in the Esterel

Because I like discovering new places to ski, ski resorts where I will at least once a winter count on the fingers of one hand. There are trails Île Perrot, because it is my home. There Rigaud Mountain, which is not far and I really like. There is the Mountain Cut where we always do our best to provide good skiing conditions. Far Hills ago, my favorite place in the Laurentians. And there is the ski resort of L'Esterel background where I went today for the third time in three winters.

There is a reason for this: since it was taken over by the team out of bounds and they are maintained as the world, The Esterel trails have become a great destination for those days when conditions are precarious.

is a maintenance issue, but also configuration. Since they all have a corridor to the skate, those tracks are relatively large - then we have room for maneuvering on descents. And besides, the terrain in that corner of the Laurentians is rather modest. There are hills, of course, may nothing really serious.

Result: I had a nice ride today with a day where I would not want to face the narrow paths Morin-Heights park where the Val-David Val-Morin was closed due to harsh conditions.

There are some novelties in L'Esterel this winter. The trailer that serves as a chalet host is no longer in the middle of the network but at the entrance. The alignment of two tracks very difficult ordered has been changed. And now there is a small relay in the forest.

center skiing L'Esterel is not perfect. It lacks a cottage home worthy of its name and a few kilometers of tracks because even a second-class skier like me feels a bit cramped. And side landscape and spectacular views, not Peru. But I'm still happy because it is very well received and because I like this corner of the Laurentians today a little apart and yet very rich in history.

Going to L'Esterel, we pass the location of the Chalet Cochand, one of the first ski resort in the Laurentians. We still see the pistes cut into the hill behind the Lake Lucerne. We skied at this location since 1915.

At Sainte-Marguerite, you can admire the modern buildings drug the Belgian Baron Louis Empain had built when he founded the field of Esterel in the 30s. Even now, the "mall" that now houses the town hall of Sainte-Marguerite and the Hotel de la Pointe Blue, which was converted into the shelter were like two UFOs in the future Laurentian landed in the forest. So imagine the time ...
